| By the time you read this, Alja will have started her 3 months' sabbatical and, of course, we all wish her well, She will be returning briefly towards the end of August to collect all the equipment required for her bike ride to Rome and will be in the Falcon Bearer during the evening of Thursday 24th August to say final farewells before setting off: all are welcome.
Many of the congregation will want somehow to stay in touch with Alja, as our vicar, while she is away, and one of the best ways of doing this seemed to be to ask her what her favourite prayer was; thus those who so wish can say it whenever they like and in this way feel some connection. The prayer is as follows: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us. This prayer is called the Jesus Prayer and is widely used in the Orthodox Church. It is a meditative prayer and because it is so short, is easily remembered. The Orthodox Church considers this prayer to contain the very essence of their belief, and indeed, it does sum up in a nutshell our total dependence on and belonging to God. The prayer is repeated (in meditation) and can even be shortened by just saying "Jesus" - what the Orthodox Church calls the invocation of the name of Jesus. This prayer was first mentioned in literature in the Life of Abba Philemon, dating from 6th to 7th centuries. Taken from August/September edition of St Cross Chronicle, the parish magazine of St Cross Church with thanks to the Editor |
