Server's Dream Comes True

Head Server at St Cross, John Hughes had a dream. Little did he know that it would come true as part of a special celebration for a special birthday!

John's dream was to serve at Chester Cathedral. He writes to explain how it came about.
For part of my 80th birthday celebrations, my wife Monica asked Jayne if it would be possible for me to serve at a Eucharist in Chester Cathedral. Jayne very kindly wrote to the Canon Precentor and was delighted when she was told that permission had been given. I couldn’t believe it when Julie, in Jayne’s absence, announced to the St Cross congregation on the Sunday prior to my visit that, on the following day, I was invited to go to Chester Cathedral to serve in St Werburgh’s Chapel. This was something I had never imagined would ever happen.

Jayne, Monica, Christopher (one of our servers) and I caught the 10.00 am train and were met at the Cathedral by the verger who took me to meet The Dean, The Very Rev. Professor Gordon McPhate who was officiating at the service. We were also joined by Robin (another server) who came on a later train. It was reassuring for me to know that I was being supported by St Cross.

The preparation before the service was different to St Cross as this was dealt with by the verger while I just stayed in the Sacristy with the Dean. I also administered the chalice as I am licensed to do so.

I felt very nervous before the service started but this went when I heard the familiar words and I felt quite comfortable. It was a privilege to serve in our beautiful cathedral and an experience I will never forget.

Jayne had taken her camera and afterwards, we all posed with the Dean so I’m sure that a photograph will appear somewhere in the magazine! (or on the web!)

I would like to thank Jayne for arranging it, but I must also thank Monica, my wonderful family and my friends for making my 80th such a memorable occasion.
